Spooky Season, Safe Vision: Halloween Eye Care Tips from Your Optometrist

Halloween is the perfect time to transform yourself — witches, vampires, zombies, or your favorite movie character! But while you’re planning your costume, don’t let your eyes become part of the fright. Here are some boo-tiful tips to help keep your eyes healthy and your vision crystal clear this spooky season.

🧛‍♂️ 1. Beware of Costume Contact Lenses

Those red, cat-eye, or all-black contacts might make your costume look amazing — but wearing non-prescription contact lenses can be seriously scary for your eyes.

  • Only buy contact lenses from a licensed eye care provider. Over-the-counter or online costume lenses that aren’t FDA-approved can cause corneal scratches, infections, or even vision loss.
  • If you want to add a spooky touch to your eyes, ask your optometrist about prescription costume lenses instead!

🕸️ 2. Don’t Reuse Old Makeup

Halloween is a great excuse to go all-out with glitter, eyeliner, and face paint, but old or shared makeup can harbor bacteria that lead to eye infections.

  • Toss out eye makeup that’s more than 3 months old.
  • Never share mascara, eyeliner, or eyeshadow — even for one night.
  • Remove all makeup completely before bed to avoid irritation or dryness.

👻 3. Mind the Glow

If you’re using glow sticks or glow-in-the-dark face paint, keep them away from your eyes. The chemicals inside glow sticks can be extremely irritating — and not the kind of scare you want on Halloween night!

🦇 4. Watch Out for Dry Eyes

If you’re heading to a Halloween party or outdoor event, dry autumn air or smoky environments can irritate your eyes. Carry lubricating eye drops and stay hydrated to keep your eyes comfortable.

🍬 5. Treat Yourself — But Don’t Trick Your Eyes

Sugar overload can cause short-term changes in your vision, especially if you have diabetes. Enjoy your candy in moderation and balance it with water and healthy snacks.

👁️‍🗨️ Trick-or-Treat Yourself to an Eye Exam

After all the Halloween fun, it’s the perfect time to schedule your annual eye exam. Regular checkups help detect vision changes early — and ensure your eyes are healthy for all the holidays to come!

Stay safe, stay spooky, and take care of your eyes — they’re the only pair you’ve got!
